The past two changes I had a shop do. The next changes I will have a shop do. It’s far too much trouble to save a few bucks.

I’ve never seen wheel stands like that. Did you build those Jenga towers?

Yeah I feel you. I did my own oil for ever. But on the TT RS you’ve got to take off so much underbody stuff to get at the drain it’s a phenomenal pain in the ass. So after doing it once I’ve resigned to letting the shop do it (not an instant oil  change place mind you... A german car speed shop I like ).

They are called cribs, and they are nailed together and quite solid. Held my Dad's Lexus for many days.

If it’s a top filter like a lot of other VAG products, you can buy a top oil change kit, and never have to get under the car.

I’m very confused as to why you have the entire vehicle raised like that. Is it because it’s supposed to be level when draining the oil? Too  low to use ramps?

It’s my Dad’s. It came with a bonus layer of fiberglass, that decided to shed itself in the water one day a while ago. So it’s getting pretty much completely redone.

1. Needs to be level.

2. Too low for ramps.

I have contemplated that. But I think taking it to the shop once a year isn't too bad. That way they can also give everything a good look to reassure me it's safe to do autox and track days.

GM’s engineers obviously hated their customers that sucks, I don’t blame you for just wanting to take it somewhere. I could hold a dinner party underneath the Land Rover and still the filter is on the top.

My Jag XE reveals that JLR spent some time studying ze  Germans. An oil change involves removing 22 fasteners to access the drain plug.

Yeah that’ll cause it to go to project status for sure. Ours was an S.C. DNR boat for most of its life so it needed some love. They did slap a 48 on it which was slightly scary.  I liked it because it was the only dark grey/green Whaler around but Dad has plans to go back to the classic white with blue interior. 3/4 ton GMT800 as well? I feel like our dads could share a cold one pretty easily.

That’s a beast. Share some updates as the Whaler project proceeds if you’re local to him and he doesn’t mind . I love a good boat resto. Dad got sidetracked last winter by a 15’ that he has since fallen in love with  so my goal is to talk him out of the 13’ in its current disassembled state to clear up some shop space for him.

If I lost weight, I could get away with jack stands. I actually can now, but it’s a bit close. The cribs plus have to jack up another jack to get the big jack under to lift it level is the biggest pain.

Make some 2x10" inch ramps that are long enough you only go up two inches every foot or 8" you should be able to get 4" that way and then only need one jack.

I like the ingenuity , but is there some reason you couldn’t just roll up on some Race Ramps (or Walmart equivalent ) pop the bolt and let the oil drain?

Kinja'd!!! Jordan and the Slowrunner, Boomer Intensifies > Danny Korecki
07/03/2020 at 22:39

Kinja'd!!!0

The drain  bolt is at the front of the pan, and the car has to be level, so the back of the car has to be up anyway. These are a lot sturdier(or at least they lock in place better) than jack stands, plus they sit a lot higher. It’s a bit of a pain to get the car up, but there is around 2 feet of room under the car, instead of maybe 1.

I would guess because then you’re relying on the lag bolts vs the stacked style being held by gravity ( and some screws/nails)

I’ve got a set of race ramps with the long ramp and they worked for my ‘87 Vette and work great for my truck and other cars.  And the ramp section is removable for better access.  But on a budget, the 2x10 setup would work.

Good point, and even with the bottom filter it could might be easier. I use the extractor for my wife’s Pacifica and my S8 all the time, but yeah top filters make it make more sense too.

thanks for responding.

front of the pan is annoying and sounds like they never thought about maintenance back in the day . I meant more for you drive on a ramp at like a slight incline, rip the e-brake and it doesnt move, you slide under and pop the bolt.

I have some Race Ramps, so I cannot confirm on the cheapest options, but from the looks Walmart Rhino Ramps can compare on the angle. I am able to drive on the ramps with no scrape with my M3 which has the Competition Package which makes it 10 m m lower than stock.

LS’s don’t like lateral g’s, so the pan was designed accordingly. There was some logic to it, it didn’t work too well, but they did think about it. The C6 answered this problem by going dry sump.

Haven't had to do a Miata yet. So I can't speak to that. The Japanese are more likely to have a door or hole cut into the tray to drain through though. Ford is all, "LOLOLOL hope you like having 3 different types of fasteners to take off our card table sized tray just so you can get to the drain plug, asshole!"

There isn’t an undertray on the Corvette , no. But they’re on almost everything else though , even if they’re not quite as bad as Ford abou t it yet.

The worst offenders are last gen 4.3 Silverados which give you a laughably tiny cutout that only serves to make a huge mess, and the Spark , which has an idiotic little flap directly under the filter whose only purpose is to spread oil EVERYWHERE.
